RFI - aka Christmas in August

My slice of heaven
Off for the RFI at the CIF

Christmas!

The day has come!  On Wednesday, we had our RFI - Rapid Field Initiative - and were issued more awesome gear than I originally thought possible. It was an all-day process, but we walked out of there with new OCP (Operation Enduring Freedom Camoflauge Pattern) uniforms which are basically a new camo print that's a cross between the desert and the woodland camo.  So we got the uniforms, plus wet weather gear, cold weather gear, hot weather gear, gerbers, camelbaks, MOLLE ruck sacks, knee and elbow pads, modular sleeping bag, duffle bag, first aid kits, helmets, vests, and about twenty pouches to put on the vest.  Plus our two weapons, the M4 and M9, which are now attached to our bodies 24/7 until we leave CST.  It really did feel like Christmas, if you're into this kind of stuff.  I wonder what the Taliban think about all the crazy gear the Americans have?  They get an AK, an RPG, and a bag of trail mix and they're on their way.  They've got to get a kick out of it.

Texas Dust Storm
On Thursday we had our first training class, it was an introduction to Dari, one of the common Afghan languages in the region which we'll be deployed.  A pretty low key day, but it gave us a few hours to get used to carrying our weapons before we actually use them, and also a time to come back and play with our new stuff.

Tomorrow we have Engagement Skills Trainer, which is a weapons simulator training course that has gas powered weapons that  recoil, and you fire at a huge screen like a video game and it tracks where you shoot.  We also have a Commo/SINGARS class from 1800-2300 - that's 11:00 pm!  First we sit around for two days, then we train until ridiculous hours.  Its going to be a long day, but it involves shooting stuff and getting paid for it.  So really life is good, except for the fact that I can't go home at night.  And except for the fact that I've seen about 15 tarantulas in the past three days, and a brown recluse was found in our building.  They scare me more than Afghanistan!

  1. Holy Crap! Talk about Christmas in July! ...or August! I want toys like that too! Maybe I have them waiting for me by the tv. Still haven't opened my "any day" present. Was thinking I might wait until the day you ship overseas. :( ...maybe it's an M9!! :)

Love the pics and that rock Rocks! :) So, where do you sleep in that last pic? I see your M4 looks like it has a pretty cozy spot. Did it take the place of Musch?!

Well, I hope you have a great Saturday Funday off. Try to work on that vest so your hip bones don't fall off!! It looks very cool tho. How much does it weight? Any idea?

Stay away from the tarantulas and the recluse! That's crazy!

ttys! I love you and miss you! Mua! <3

I am glad you are still enjoying you Desert Vacation. Love the pics and narration. All that shooting make me jealous, may have to go out back and plunck some cans. We will have to have a contest when you get back.

    Stay safe...
